You wouldn’t think that a toothpick could be bad for your teeth. After all, it’s called a toothpick. However, frequent and forceful toothpick use can damage your teeth and gums. Dentists recommend other teeth cleaning alternatives to toothpicks.
Why Toothpicks Are Bad For Your Teeth?
Toothpicks worked great as a primitive cleaning device, but today we have much better options to clean our teeth with. The toothpick is no longer the norm for a bright smile because it can cause damage to the mouth such as:
- Lacerating the Gums: This can happen if toothpicks are used frequently or vigorously.
- Damaging Tooth Enamel: Especially if one chews on the toothpick.
- Chipping Veneers and Bondings: Dental restorations can also fracture because of toothpick use.
- Damaging Tooth Roots: Especially if the gums have pulled away from the tooth.
Advice About Toothpick Use
You can use a toothpick if you clean your teeth with it gently, but it is still not recommended. There are better solutions to teeth cleaning such as toothbrushes, floss, or interdental brushes. Toothpicks can be used only if no other cleaners are readily available.
