Periodontal disease, also known as gingivitis, is an infection that attacks the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. Gingivitis is caused by the formation of plaque on the teeth and under the gums. If left untreated, periodontal disease can cause tooth loss. If you have any of the following symptoms, Dr. Karey may treat gingivitis in Ann Arbor, Michigan:
- Red, swollen, and sore gums
- Gums that bleed easily when you brush and floss
- Receding gums
- Persistent bad breath
- Pus coming from the gums
- A change in your bite
- Loose permanent teeth
If you have periodontal disease, our dentists may recommend that you come in for professional teeth cleaning more than twice a year. During these appointments, our hygienist will clean all of your teeth of plaque and tartar with a metal tool. If this is not sufficient for your needs, our dentists may perform a deep cleaning procedure called scaling and root planing. Plaque and tartar are removed from all teeth, above and below the gum line. The roots of your teeth are then smoothed, which makes it hard for tartar to adhere to them. This also provides a clean surface for your gums to reattach to.
